About Us -
Misty Autumn sunrise on the farm
Keenleavale was formed over 18 years ago when my husband and I bought a small farm at Kurrajong, on the outskirts of Sydney. We had a desire to relocate our growing family to a rural life in the picturesque foothills of the Blue Mountains. At that time we moved 4 Dexter X females onto the property as grass munchers. We quickly grew attached to our girls and they delighted us with their antics, particularly the building supervision they performed during construction of our house - we regularly found evidence of their inspections left behind on the concrete slab! We have experienced many more memorable occasions with our Dexters, like the time the bull found a gate accidentally left open, and escaped, and we dubbed him 'Romeo' as he disappeared off into the sunset on Valentines Day, in search of female company! And the very rewarding experience of hand-rearing a bull calf, now known as 'Odie', who found a home in a busy preschool, and delighted everyone with his placid temperament.
Whilst finding a place in our hearts, our Dexters have also played an important role in satisfying our desire to live with a greater degree of self sufficiency. It was a natural progression to become members of DCAI in January 2006 and begin breeding these beautifully trusting, inquisitive, and friendly creatures that suited our lifestyle needs. I quickly became am active member of the Dexter Group of Sydney and since 2008 have held various positions including Secretary, Publicity Officer, and Treasurer. In this capacity I have been pro-active in promoting the breed by producing promotional material, writing articles for publication, and displaying cattle at Agricultural field Days. More recently I held a position as a DCAI Councillor and enjoyed the challenge of this role in helping to serve the members.
At Keenleavale Dexters we strive to breed quality Dexter cattle that are true to the breed, with good temperaments, and free of the known inherited genetic conditions affecting Dexters including Chondrodysplasia and PHA. We regularly handle our cattle and they love to be hand fed. We breed registered cows and heifers, we mostly keep our steers for beef, and our herd is great at mowing the paddocks. We enjoy a small herd, due to restricted land size, and regularly have cows and heifers for sale and sometimes bulls for sale.
Enjoy your Dexter cattle!
